I found all of the surrealist "you die because you ran out of time and/or lost a race" levels to be weird. The comets almost have an excuse built in (radiation poisoning, perhaps?), but why does Mario just flat-out die if he loses a race with a ghost, or a squad of penguins? Let's not even get started on what the shark might be doing to Mario after he fails to swim through 8 rings...
