I don't think it was there only choice, but I do think that it is a choice which could lead to success. They probably could have moved to social/mobile gaming but that would have required greater restructuring which costs money. They already had the studios for high quality core games so they could just cut all the other studios and focus their resources on that much esier. They don't really have much social/mobile gaming experience and their studios making smaller games were all lossing money, the cost of going that route could have killed them just as AAA development could. 

That's kind of what I meant. It's not their only choice, but it's imho their most sensical chance at good sustainable profit.
