I think I tend to lean towards water types. It varies from gen to gen a bit, but Feraligatr is where it's at. Sure, Charizard's cool and all, but I had Blue version anyway...
The problem is that I think of the starters as correlating to difficulty level selection: Bulbasaur is "easy," Squirtle is "normal," Charmander is "hard." Second gen was the opposite: Cyndaquil was "easy," Totodile was "normal," Chikorita was "hard." So I feel guilty about choosing Bulbasaur or Cyndaquil -- I feel like I'm playing on easy mode.
