The atmosphere can actually be pretty incredible. Literally crawling your way through abandoned towns can feel unbelievibly unsettling if you're by yourself. And some encounters with other players can feel tense as hell, unlike any encounters I would have in any another game. As you mentioned, the sense of scale is great, thanks to a massive map and a great draw distance, and this helps with the atmosphere immensely, it really makes you feel isolated and alone. You just have to play it dude, a YT video or 2 doesn't do it justice. It has it's problems, but it's FAR from complete, it's an alpha mod. The zombie animations are fucked up, and you'll experience your fair share of glitches, but it's not game breaking, the mod is still awesome.
