I blame Microsoft with rushing the system release fully aware of the overheating issues rather than just blame it soley on cheaper manufacturing. It was more a break down in the basic manufacturing process when you have a known problem but give the order to continue production with no corrections made. The problems had to of been known while manufacturing it at Flextronics sites (I am pretty sure this is the main outsource company they used and the company I actually work for right now). Sure they used cheap components but the problem could have been easily fixed in the early stages of manufacturing. I believe Microsoft knew of the problem but just hoped it wouldn't be so wide spread. Kind of like a car company that debates whether it is cheaper to settle lawsuits for defective cars or issue a full recall.
