People bought the Wii for the gimmick in passing. Wii Sports just so happened to come with it. Nintendo has been doing this for years ever since the first bundle with Duck Hunt. I want to see the sales of Wii Sports outside of bundles. 

fair point. I pretty much meant that Wii Sports being the best example of the motion control gimmick as you call it, is why they bought the Wi in the first place.

If we look at Japan (as the game was not bundled there) about 30% of Wii Owners picked up Wii Sports (according to VGCHartz numbers).

I wish I could tell at what point in time the Wii vs the Game was in japan just to see if the inital burst was because of the gimmick (i.e. Wii Sports) then later sales was due to the actual Nintendo first party games or if Wii Sports has had stead sale legs since launch.
