Well the Wii didn't have a Mario platformer for an entire year after launch, and the Wii was Nintendo's most successful console ever. So what does that say about the "Must have a Mario at launch" theory?

The Wii had Wii Sports which made all the casuals and kids go crazy for the system, in this case the Wii U have NintendoLand, but unlike Wii Sports that game doesn't really appeal that much to the casuals.

OP: Depending on how long the game it's from the launch date, if it's just a couple of weeks I think it's not really a big deal, of course it will be better if it was at launch.

I was in line at Target overnight on launch day for the Wii.  40+ people.  Sleeping bags, tents... we were all there for Twilight Princess.  Wii Sports only has appeal to the impulse buyer who walks by the video game aisle with their cart and says "Oh this is that thing I heard about where you swing your arms",  "Let's get it for the kids".
