Trophies not retroactive.

"Kojima Productions has confirmed in Session 164 of the Kojima Productions Report that the upcoming patch for Metal Gear Solid 4 on PlayStation 3 that will add Trophy Support will not be retroactive, which means you'll have to earn the Big Boss emblem all over again, as well as acquire every weapon and every piece of music in the game again to unlock the accompanying trophy with it, because your current saves won't be compatible.

The trophies for Metal Gear Solid 4 have been in development for years, starting and stopping due to staff changing projects, and the reason why they aren't retroactive is because Metal Gear Solid 4 started development before trophies existed. There will be some tough trophies and trophies that require more than one playthrough.

The report also confirmed once and for all that the patch, that will add the Trophies into Metal Gear Solid 4 will include the full install functionality as well. Although they didn't say exactly how big the install would be, and the reason why the original version of Metal Gear Solid 4 had installs per chapter back in 2008 was because the original PS3 dev kits had small harddrives and were less advanced than those available today, so the team didn't know what size harddrive people had in their PlayStation 3, but now think that most people have upgraded their harddrives to a larger capacity."
