Well, I don't know all of the details of how engine licenses work, but I find it hard to believe that there would be no extra costs for getting support on more than one platform. A quick look reveals that one of the two main license methods involves royalties - for royalty-based licenses, having it available on more platforms is better, so they'd want UE3 because it's available for more platforms.

UE4 will offer a royalty model as well so again more platforms the better. To license UE3 outright most reports indicate that it's arround $1 million and then you can do what you like with it for one game, tho they do offer discounts if you license for multiple games. UE4 reportadly costs more to license at least initially so again it's in Epics interest to get UE4 on as many platforms as possible so that more devs license it over UE3.

Sure, but my point is that I'd expect it to be better for Epic to have third-party games on 360/PS3/WiiU using UE3, rather than just on WiiU using UE4. But once the Sony and MS successor consoles are released, UE4 on all three will be the preferred situation.
