I think the Wii/DS could be the iPod of the video game world. MP3 players existed well before Apple, but Apple was the first to really market towards the 90% of the population that is non-technology focused. Apple never got caught up in a feature/technology war with it's competitors. The iPod is a solid piece of technology that is simple to use, but it has never been the most advanced MP3 player with the most features.
Apple never focused on the hardcore audiophiles or technogeeks to their dismay. The iPod has been called a fad and inferior throughout its existence by the hardcore crowd. A lot of the current criticisms I hear about the Wii from the hardcore gaming crowd sound awfully familiar to the criticisms by they hardcore gaming crowd.
