I've only played it on Wii so far, and the motion controls were great for brush strokes, but somewhat annoying for regular attacks (think Twilight Princess style, only with somewhat odd timing). I've heard people claim the ps2' version's analog controls were better than motion controls for the brush controls, but I find that hard to believe given the brush controls on Wii were one of the best implementations of motion controls I've experienced on the system.
I've heard only one report of Move's implentation so far, that it was "weak", but I'm not sure if that's relative to the WIi version's controls, or if the person just has a preference for the ps2 version's controls.
In the end, no, motion controls aren't necessary by any means.
