I'm confused. Either you are just talking about Japan in which case you are mistaken. Or you are talking about globally in which case you are mistaken.
In Japan the DS outsold the PS2 a long time ago. It did in fact outsell it by nearly 10 million. So I really don't think Nintendo is worried about staying ahead on a weekly basis.
While globally the DS is still outselling the PS2 on a weekly basis so will perhaps overtake it's global total someday.
Personally I feel that in a couple of years that vague 'Rest of the world' number will be updated for the DS by quite a bit.
