Um. More than likely that was an estimated Production Run. They have probably done nothing more than make a dozen or a few dozen prototypes.

It's too bad I don't have the cash lying around, I could have gotten in when there were some dev kits left. Looks like I will have to buy at full price.

what does the number of prototypes have to do with "we say we only have 10k and when we reach that number we simply increase it to 20k and in few hours maybe to 30k or so instead of saying 30k from beginning"?

i don't say they can produce millions until march, but they could change the number from 10k to 20k in a minute after they sold the 10k. why exactly couldn't they say 20k  from start then if they seem to know they can produce 20k? ask mr. marketing, he would explain you why letting people think they have to buy as fast as possible let's them buy it as fast as possible instead of waiting maybe a week or so.
