It's not because something sells consoles that its a gimmick, otherwise Angry Birds is a gimmick, Diablo and WoW are gimmicks, Final Fantasy VII, among all FFs, is the one that is the most gimmicky of all of them because it pushed the most HW and SW.

The gimmickness of something is measured by an intrinsic attribute, popularity is inconsequential. Had the Wii been unpopular, would it not have been a gimmick? Very odd logic up there.


Your examples are bad, those are games. Games cant be gimmicks. Why is DVD a gimmick and not motion controls. I would put motion control in the that category. Simple because it didnt add much to gaming. There are very few types of games that benefited from its use. IMHO. It might not be as much of a gimmick as DVD playback. 

I never said the DVD format was a gimmick, and if I did it was me not being clear. What I did say though is that DVD-playback is a gimmick, which is alot of what S.T.A.G.E. was pushing and I wanted to fight him on that front.

Put it this way, both the Vita and the 3DS use catridges today, and the future is going digital. The DVD format is just that, a format. I won't say its a gimmick, but compared to motion controls which will be in gaming forever, even as we get closer to virtual reality, are here to stay.

To call them a gimmick is horrible lack of foresight and understanding of the potential of what is only the beginning for this huge facet of gaming, which will one day probably be the predominant form of control even in advanced gaming setups.

Enough about the future. If something is used in few cases in gaming, but in the cases it's used it brings a lot of value to the experience, then I don't consider that not adding much to gaming.

For my previous post, my examples are horrible I agree, because the logic I based them on was wack.

DVD and DVD playback go hand in hand. The PS2 games used DVD format so why would it not be able to play ANY DVD disc. By that logic the cameras in 3DS are a gimmick, the Ninty video is a gimmick, web browsing, Netflix, Hulu, etc.
