I'm not sure if it was confirmed, or whether it is still true now, but back in the early days of VGC (2006/7) the forum was under the impression Amazon rankings are updated by the hour, which means a single snapshot of the ranks is not a particularly good source of sales data even just for Amazon sales alone (never mind trying to extrapolate it across the rest of the industry)
Someone would have to monitor the ranks constantly to get some decent info.
