Because Nintendo overuses Mario as a lever to make cash. They release a Mario game every three or six months (regardless of the genre) while barely renewing them. Microsoft makes a Halo once a year or so (which is already very frequent), Sony releases Uncharted every 2 two years, 1 or 2 Gran Turismo per gen.
How could core gamers who heavily favor mature games not feel frustrated when they see a manufacturer put so much emphasis on a series that is aimed at everyone (not to say to a much younger public). Look, here on French TV 3DS ads are ALL about Mario 3DLand! Where is Resident Evil Revelations? Why do we have to wait until 2013 to play Fire Emblem? Why is Beyond the Labyrinth not coming to the West? If Mario is hated, it's because he's at the forefront of that casual orientation Nintendo has taken those past years.
