I personally liked 8, and on many days 6 a little more than 7. Although, I think those 3 in particular had something very special about them that no one else seems to be able to replicate; even themselves.
My take:
Unless Square stops trying to develop games the way they do, then I just don't see something like an FF game surpassing FF7 ever happening.
I personally couldn't care less about how much better their later games look than 7; particularly when due to the cost of graphics Square's unable to build a world as marvelous and intriguing as the world of FF7.
