And surely you understood the first part? If a new user creates a thread where he suggest a few changes to a certain franchise and lots of comments saying how absolutely wrong he is gets upvoted, surely his self esteem won't be 'boosted'.

 

And how is that any worse then just telling him how wrong he is etc??.

 

It gives him a sense of having a less valuable opinion.

Let's say that he's having a long discussion with another user who disagrees with his opinion, and each post that he makes receives no like while the opponent keep receiving at least five. That would make him feel less secure about expressing his opinion.

It's like having an audience yelling 'Boooo!' at you while you try to have a discussion with someone.
