And surely you understood the first part? If a new user creates a thread where he suggest a few changes to a certain franchise and lots of comments saying how absolutely wrong he is gets upvoted, surely his self esteem won't be 'boosted'.

Though I do get your first part now, makes sense. 

The last part is about relativity. A comment only getting a few- or no likes won't be too much different from comments with dislikes. Or at least not if the opposing comments have much more likes.

A like button would not only boost self esteem, it would also decrease it.
