As a fervent atheist who has befriended a great many Mormons from swimming and water polo (all Mormons love aquatic sports), I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that LDS is not a cult (or, it's no more a cult than any other religion). I've always thought it strange that people view Mormonism as a cult. LDS is a church that praises tight community and family bonds, and promotes hard and charitable work.
It always seems to be the ignorant ones who raise an objection to Romney's Mormonism. In the end, it won't be a huge issue, I lived in Michigan when it came out that his father was a member of LDS (he was governor at the time) and it seemed to only be a scandal in the eyes of the media and those who thought their sect of Christianity was the only true one.
