It's had a holiday. Infact, it LAUNCHED mid-holiday, and it still never beat the 3DS (I believe after launch week the 3DS was outselling it 5:1 or more)?

yeah, according to Media Create, the Vita has never once surpassed the 3DS in regards to weekly sales, not even launch week (which iirc coincided with MH3G release).  This charts shows the dire state of Vita sales, especially considering that it Japan it was coming off the back of a very successful platform both in hardware and software sales: http://i.imgur.com/QVLS5.png

 

I love the PSP and thought that it's successor would be similar.  However, I can help feeling that the 3DS has taken the place of the DS and the PSP.  I really hope the PSV situation improves, it doesn't deserve this.

Well take a look at the recent releases in japan. The ratio of PSP to Vita games is like 90/10.

PSP is getting games, Vita isn't.

About your 3DS comparision, it has Mario and Monster Hunter...........PSP was so successful because of Monster Hunter which Vita doesn't have yet. I expect an announcement at TGS.
