"I know people who are playing Smash Bros. Brawl competitively today. They’re playing hours on that game. People are playing hours on New Super Mario Bros.”

This is exactly the point with Nintendo this generation. Brawl could have greatly benefited from stability updates and maybe some DLC. I'm sure there are still people playing it competitively and having a great time. But just because it's functional doesn't mean it couldn't have been a lot better if Nintendo had put some more effort in.

They could have put more time into making their first-party games have more lasting experiences too. Mario Kart Wii was great and all, Brawl to an extent, and Mario Strikers. But come on. Conduit received fuck all support from Nintendo (I know it's third party, but still) when they could easily have hyped it up/ helped with development more to at least have said "Well we've got a decent exclusive FPS experience".

And I mean, where was the stuff to compliment the games they have? Where was F-Zero with an online mode? Why was Excitebots not released outside the USA? Why did it take so much effort to get the Operation Rainfall games released outside Japan?

I'm not saying it didn't hurt that Nintendo got so little third-party support - of course it did - but they could have filled in a lot of the gaps themselves with some more effort.
