I believe it's somewhat open but you still have to be involved with the industry in some cursory manner like work at a gamestop or something.  And then there's the exhorbant price for tickets if you arne't getting them free as media.

This is just based off of memory, but I recall the number being closer to 800 than 100.

edit:  What I can find says that it was definitely 400 bucks in 2011, but I swear they doubled it this year.
