I didn't think it was bad. I just got stuck against the evil Ryu boss fight and I was like "What's my insentive for trying to beat this boss?" so I traded it in for lollipop chainsaw after I couldn't think of any.
Edit: though the complaints you mention about the steele on bone and ninpou never really bothered me. It reminded me of the good ol beatem up days. Well the ninpou anyways. Like the game had a more arcade feeling than the last 2 3D games, which I don't think is a bad thing, I just didn't like any of the boss fights.
