I am undecided when it comes to 3D. I love watching a movie in 3D but for gaming I am afraid my eyes get tired after a while.

I bought a 3DS a few weeks ago and after a while it really gets exhausting to have the 3D effect on.

I am afraid 3D is a fad. Most signs point it being a fad right? (if we try to measure how much electronics companies are promoting it and developing it, what film-makers and game-developers are saying about it, what the word on the street is, what review and tech sites are saying, consumer buying trends etc).

Yes, 3D is a fad. This isn't the first time that 3D was supposed to become a big thing. It's failing time and time again, even though the technology got better over time. 3D isn't exactly something people want to pay for, so investments in development and marketing of 3D technology will inevitably be scaled back. If you are interested in 3D, there's no need to rush out and get a 3D TV now, because prices will come down due to the lack of massmarket interest.

Yeah, that's a big personal dilemma. I need a new big screen TV for my living room but I just don't know how to take 3D into the equation (wait for glasses-free 3D or not, get a TV with HDMI that supports 1080p 3D gaming or not or ignore the 3D specs entirely).

And from a gaming perspective. How should I view it I think. Like you have said, 3D doesn't add anything to the experience in a deeper sense. With my 3DS I'm thinking the 3D effect is cool and all but my gaming experience is no worse without it. At least that's what I'm leaning towards now (now that my eyes hurt after a while, dammit).
