They were likely doing it with the idea of creating a meme secondary. What you saw there as a bit of a tweak of generic filler they use during a presentation, for marginal humor effect. But no denying that maybe there was meme creation in mind, just like Iwata holding up bananas for no reason during the same presentation:
It is done for no particular reason, but does keep you entertained... in some way. If you can explain why Iwata was holding bananas there, then let me know.
