That doesn't sound like red ocean thinking to you? The Wii was about making gaming simpler and more accessible. The Wii U's philosophy is just "more cowbell".

Do you seriously think that SmartGlass would of been introduced if Nintendo didn't go second screen with the WiiU?  

The reality is WIiU caused Microsoft and Sony to also add a second screen interface to their systems.  

1st versions of SmartGlass were shown last year. With Windows Phone integration with Xbox 360 and the Xbox Companion Device updates added to the dashboard last year.  With both Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows 8 Release Preview you have the basics for SmartGlass already today.
