NINTENDO's handheld DS console has sold over a million units in Australia on the back of strong Christmas sales.

According to figures from gaming analyst firm GfK, the feat was achieved in 158 weeks, the shortest period of time to surpass the million mark compared with other gaming devices.

Sony’s PlayStation 2 is the only other console to pass the milestone, GfK said.

The DS was the highest selling console over Christmas, with 133,691 units sold, followed by Nintendo's Wii with 73,318 units sold, GfK said.

Recently released figures by GfK showed 48,000 PlayStation 3 consoles sold prior to Christmas.

Since its launch in March, 155,000 PS3 units have been sold.

The analyst firm said by mid-January, 303,000 Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles were purchased.
