It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who criticize Sony's gaming strategy when they have sold more home consoles in 13 years than Nintendo have in 30. How on earth can you criticize their lack of business sense when the 8 year old PS2 is outselling the 360 so far this year?

 Smart people do stupid things the same way smart companies do stupid things.  You can be a catholic priest but if you touch an alter boy in his "naughty place" you go to jail.

Past victories and accomplishments simply do not make you immune to future mistakes and using them as a defense is a laughably weak argument that really only fools someone who wants to believe it in the first place and Sony has without any doubt made some absolutely terrible decisions this generation.  Thats is the fact of the matter and you can spin it any way you like but it will still be a true statement.

With that said I agree with the rest of your post. The PS3 has gotten a lot healthier over the last couple of months and its far from dead in the water. But it also needs to continue showing strength if it wants to catch the 360.

The fact is that this is only the beginning of the PS3's run towards a comeback because the week before the PS3 launched the 360 was at 5.2m WW. Here we are 14 months later and the PS3 is behind by 7.1m a gap which has gotten smaller by 100k from the beginning of october when the gap was at 7.2m. So the gap has actually gotten larger since launch.  There are of course several reasons (but not excuses) for that, one of which was its staggered launch.

So yes the PS3 is improving its numbers and its situation but no Sony is nowhere near deserving a free pass for the mistakes of this generation.  If anything the past sales success of the PS1 and PS2 in contrast to the sales of the PS3 should highlight the mistakes made, not wash them away.

@topic,

Here is a better way to do this comparison so that you don't have people jumping on you about the reasons it is the way it is:

 JapanOtherTotal
         360 564,337    5,422,045     5,986,382
         PS3     1,829,771    4,008,280
     5,838,051

 This way people can see whats up with Japan and nobody feels like you're trying to give the wrong impression etc...Its all sorta nitpicky but its best not to give folks a reason to pick at it if you can help it.

The comparison is still very interesting imo because it means that soon the PS3 will be getting a boost from the rest of the World in tackling the fortified sanctuary of the US that the 360 has built up.  Its going to need a boost from all territories to start pushing into that lead.  Even the Wii craze is having an uphill battle towards that goal.
