I'll definitely give Sony credit for that, first CD-based console. Sony did have (back in their glory days) solid r&d, usually geared towards media & consumer electronics (not gaming). Sony didn't develop CD, DVD, or blu-ray with gaming in mind, although it wasn't a bad idea to use them for gaming. But to be honest, most of what Sony did in the gaming sector was a rip off of what nintendo did, as outlined in Aielyn's post.

(max, Sony didn't release the first CD-enabled system. That goes to the Saturn, even arguable to the non-leading 3DO, or even to the Sega CD and other such add-ons)
