I think that the potential applications of the tablet are huge. Being able to switch from TV to Tablet is a huge feature for me personally, and anyone who has to share a bedroom or has kids in the house. The potential for gameplay is also staggering. Imagine setting up a spy camera in an FPS and being able to see the feed on the tablet. Even routine features have the potential to be huge. Personally, I would have enjoyed Skyrim MUCH MUCH more if I had been able to map different spells to touch buttons.
As for the idea of tablet gaming not being brand spanking new, I think that's kind of the point. Nintendo wants the controller to be familiar and non-intimidating to non-gamers. As long as Nintendo uses the tablet in new and innovative ways, they won't have much trouble selling casual gamers on the idea. Of course, it all comes down to the software...
