Yeah the magic system was useless until mid game when you started getting those ability which reduced casting time. I personally got screwed over at the beginning because of that. You have to rely on items on the first half of the game. Game becomes quite easy later on with those haxed abilities, and you can get to areas where the level cap isn't too low so you can level higher.
