Because trends change as the years go by. Think back to 2008 when the iPhone first came out and everyone "hated" touch screen and now it's the most dominate phone on the market. Digital sales are becoming bigger because they're cheaper and just as fun (or more fun in some cases) as major retail games. It's not the rules changing, it's the times. 

Very good arguement, well made. It just seems convinient but I think you might be right.
