Why would Square hand off its series to a developer who has produced lower reviewed and fewer sales?

they've sort of done it before.

Maybe they'd want to move on and try something new while making money off of old IP idk like Naughty Dog. They've always done it with dragon quest even when it was enix (I believe they were only a publishing house and never actually developed anything).

So in a sense they already do it. Tri-Ace (Star Ocean), Level 5 (Dragon Quest, except the new one). Even FFXIII-2 was partially developed by tri-ace.

But to mistwalker... I don't think's gonna happen, for the reasons you listed, plus the sakaguchi dynamic. You'd first have to see SE publish a mistwalker game I think and build their relationship. But probably not.

Square hasn't made a DQ in house in well over a decade. They've switched developers multiple times.

Tri-Ace's participation in XIII-2 isn't very noteworthy either. Studios assist in development all the time, and there wasn't some special case with XIII-2.
