Why would Square hand off its series to a developer who has produced lower reviewed and fewer sales?

they've sort of done it before.

Maybe they'd want to move on and try something new while making money off of old IP idk like Naughty Dog. They've always done it with dragon quest even when it was enix (I believe they were only a publishing house and never actually developed anything).

So in a sense they already do it. Tri-Ace (Star Ocean), Level 5 (Dragon Quest, except the new one). Even FFXIII-2 was partially developed by tri-ace.

But to mistwalker... I don't think's gonna happen, for the reasons you listed, plus the sakaguchi dynamic. You'd first have to see SE publish a mistwalker game I think and build their relationship. But probably not.

Xcuse me? tri-Ace is the original creators and developers of  Star Ocean. Also Armor project has developed every DQ they just use other developers as grunts.

they don't own the IP. SE does. I never claimed they didn't develop/create SO. But it's always been an enix owned IP, unless I'm wrong enix did this for every IP they owned.

Armor Project is not SE either, it's Yuji Horii's production company which has an exclusive deal with SE.
