Pretty different in some ways except the tone.
The core Shin Megami Tensei games are tradtional RPGs but usually take place just before or after the end of the world and deals with the survivors, demons, morality and all sort of freaking demon designs.
As someone else mentioned, it is darker then your standard Persona or even Devil Survivor game, but roughly up the same path minus the school setting.
