If the Wii-U does terrible and fails Nintendo's stock will plummet. Apple, Microsoft, or Sony could buy up Nintendo's stock and hostilily take over Nintendo. Nintendo's competitiors are massive multi-billion dollar companies, with a ton of power. Were talking some of the biggest businesses in the world! Nintendo despite being successful this last gen is no longer the king of gaming. Their kingdom has been usurped by much more powerful companies.Like it or not Sony, Microsoft, and Sony run the video game world now. Wrong. Sony and Microsoft hardly run the game world compared to Nintendo. The Wii proved that more than anything, despite its lacking 3rd party support. Nintendo has proven that they can be successful by pretty much just relying on their 1st party games and IPs. Microsoft and Sony could only dream of being able to do the same. Furthermore, you greatly overestimate the amount of money that Sony has to throw around. While they're not without their billions in the bank, they're also not without their debt, in which Nintendo has zero.
2. The core market has changed since the NES and SNES. I do agree that those were core games back in the day, but by todays standard they're more niche and only kept alive by nostalgic fans. I mean the core gamers of today are playing COD, Gears of War, Uncharted, Assasin's Creed, Bioshock, and GTA, they really don't care about games like Contra, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, Castlevania, and the many others. Today those games are to Japanese and Anime and the only reason the media talks up those games is because of what I like to the "Grandfather effect' Where in the game used to be the cool thing and mainstream so its ok to still like it because it's old school. Your point that the core titles that are popular today are different than in the past is irrelevant. What you originally said was that Nintendo never had the core, which is incorrect as I pointed out.
Pretty much all Nintendo games are given this benefit. If the Legend of Zelda series never existed and Skyward Sword was the first Zelda game ever created it would have been torn up by the gaming media. The only reason Zelda can still be considered cool is because of it's past accomplishments. I mean do you really think any current day gamer would embrace this new series, where the main hero was a metro sexual looking guy who doesn't talk and lives in a fantasy world in the sky? The fact that skyward sword doesn't have any voice acting alone would make the game receive a ton of critism, but it doesn't because of it's lineage. The gaming media gives it a pass. The game received plenty of criticism; it didn't get a free pass at all, so I don't know why you even mention this. In the end, most people would agree that the game is good, even if not great, and there are plenty of reviews that reflect this.
3. Oh there were jocks, adults, and teens who played the SNES and Sega Genisis, The Playstation just brougth in a lot more of them and made them the focus of the Playstation. Due to the Playstations media capabilites with CD technoligies games could become more realistic and life like. The sports games changed from more arcadesy to more Simulation and trying to emulate real life. They're were now in game cutscenes and the games started to shift from a more cartoon/fantasy setting to a more realistic setting. Pretty much what I already stated before: The Playstation broadened the core. But at least you now acknowledge that it wasn't just kids and nerds that played games before the playstation, which is absurd.
The PS sold over 100 Million units worldwide and the SNES only sold 49 million. The core market started to change when the PS was released and it marks the birth of the modern core gamer. So there were a lot of people who shunned those games "50 million" and to further prove my point just look at the N64's sales 32 million, So a lot of gamers left Nintendo during that time meaning that aprox 70 million gamers were more interested PS then the N64. Only Kids and Nintendo fans bought and played the N64 because the core market Sony created didn't want anything to do with them Not sure what your point is here. Nintendo made a lot of misteps with the N64? I guess I agree. Surely it's not that none of those Playstation owners were NES or SNES fans, because that would be incorrect.
4. I agree that there are some adults who aren't image conscious and love Nintendo games. Heck I'm 25 and my favorite series is the Legend of Zelda. Thing is a lot of Adults won't admit to playing Nintendo games unless they have an excuse. For example I Know a ton of adult gamers who justify playing Mario by stating things such as, I own a 360/PS3 but the Wii is for my GF/Wife/KIds so I like to play Mario games with them. You obviously play Bioshock and own either/or PS3 Xbox 360 so you can easily just say " I love Mario games but I also play Bioshock, GTA etc." Thus by saving face. An adult can watch cartoons as long as he/she also watches adult shows. The Adult who only watches cartoons and plays kiddy games like Mario is looked down upon by society. I guess that's your view. I love Bioshock because I think it's incredible. I love Mario because, again, I think it's incredible. I don't play Bioshock to compensate for my love of Mario, and there are plenty of people who have the same attitude.
5. That's the thing though. Nintendo can't rely on 3rd party support because they will simply ditch them when the next Xbox and PS4 come out. You said it yourself Nintendo hasn't had good reliable 3rd party support since the NES and SNES era. Nintendo at best will just get ports of 3rd party games and Microsoft and Sony will always get the better games. So it doesn't matter if GTA 5 will come to the Wii-U because it will be on the other consoles and the core gamers won't go out a buy a pathetic and gimmicky Nintendo system to play them. ... unless the WiiU is not perceived as "pathetic" or "gimmicky". There is absolutely no way to determine what will happen as far as WiiU and 3rd party support. The N64 was initially shunned because of the cartridge format, the Gamecube had nothing to set it apart from the monster that was the PS2, and the Wii couldn't handle cross-platform games. The WiiU will be plenty powerful and incredibly easy to port to; not to mention that it is the first 8th gen console to hit the market. So while it's by no means a sure thing for WiiU to get consistent 3rd party attention, saying that 3rd parties will ditch it the second the NeXtBox and PS4 arrive (both with a zero install base) is quite presumptuous on your part. The one point I will wholeheartedly agree with is that Nintendo cannot rely on 3rd party support for success.
6. Yup Nintendo can only hope to get back those that they lost. Again, this is presumptuous on your part.
7. I should have been more specific. The 3DS has been marketed toward the core crowd but has horribly failed. Oh it's been successful but that's thanks only to Nintendo's die hard fans, not the core crowd. Just look at Resident Evil Revelations it sold terribly here in the states and yet Operation Raccoon City sold much better then it. The core gamer hates Nintendo and RE Revelations in just one example of it. They would rather buy a terrible 3rd person shooter then game on an Nintendo console. Nintendo is a poisenous cancer ridden disease that has infected their gaming industry with stupid gimmicks, underpowered hardware, and motion controls. That's what the media and core gamers believe. While there are people that think that, the market in general does not think of Nintendo in this way. And no, most core gamers don't hate Nintendo, they just haven't had a reason in the last three generations to embrace them, as many of their preferred games weren't on Nintendo systems. This is exactly what WiiU is trying to change. And regarding your Resident Evil example, how do you explain the healthy sales that Resident Evil 4 enjoyed on both the Gamecube and the Wii?
8. Why are there so many Nintendo is Doomed articles and threads then? Are all these analyst and journalist really wrong or is there truth to what they say. Or we Nintendo fans just clinging on to a dream world and shunning reality? Why were there so many articles before the Wii launched in which these same "analysts" insisted that Nintendo would be lucky to end up with 15% of the market? I rest my case.
The gamers of today hate the Wii! Just look at how the gaming media treats it. If someone didn't know any better they would think that the Wii was a massive failure. This system has brought the core gamers nothing but anguish and pain. Their weren't gimmicky things like motion controls, touch screen gaming, and Kinect until Nintendo introduced the Wii. Actually, Nintendo introduced touch-screen gaming two years before the Wii. And as far as calling it a gimmick? DS, 3DS, smart phones and tablets say, "Hi".
The Wii is the cause of all the problems for the core gamers. It has terrible hardware, horrific online and it's games are a joke. It's a childs toy, a soccer Mom's workout machine, and a Nintendo's fans nostalgic fueled, over milked franchise spewing machine that is enarmored with releasing another another Mairo and Zelda game. Nintendo is a poisen to the industry. A malignant cancer that must be stopped before it can grow and destroy any more of gaming. Core games won't be fooled by Nintendo again, they won't pick up a Wii-U, they won't be suckered in by Nintendo again. They won't support Nintendo's radical departure from traditional gaming. The gaming media and community are fed up with Nintendo influencing and destroying their industry and eagerly await the rapidly approaching day that Nintendo admits defeat. The day when Reggie's body is not ready and Iwata has the bomb dropped on him! It sounds like you have quite a bit of angst toward Nintendo yourself, unless you are just giving an example of what some people think. If it's the former, I disagree with you. If it's the latter, I would simply state that you don't give Nintendo or core gamers enough credit. Remember, when I say core gamers I don't mean die-hard Microsoft and Sony fans or Nintendo haters. There are plenty of core gamers out there willing to give WiiU a chance... so long as they deliver the goods. |
1. Then why does the gaming media act like Microsoft and Sony do? Nintendo is in trouble right now. The 3DS is selling poorly in the West. The mobile gaming has eaten into their market and apple is looking to take over Nintendo by force. Of course Microsoft and Sony would love to claim Nintendo as their own. As we know Microsoft and Apple could easily buy Nintendo if the Wii-U fails. But don't count Sony out. Sony would love to get back at Nintendo for backstabbing them all those years ago. Sony isn't in as much trouble as some think.
Plus Sony has the money to do it. Would it be a crazy move? Heck yes, but were talking about the company that sacrificed a goat to promote God of War 2. Ken Kutaragi would love to take over Nintendo. It would be like sweet sweet payback.
2. You're correct I was mistaken. Nintendo did have the core market back then. But the core market has changed and is now hateful of Nintendo and it's pathetic games and hardware.
3. Sorry if I made it seem like only Nerds and Kids played games back then I apologize. But the expanded audience that sony created is now the core gamer and those gamers would only use the Wii a toilet.
4. I'm glad that you're a big enough man to proudly admit to having no shame in playing what like. Sadly the vast majority of core gamers are between the ages of 10 and 25 and those gamers are the ones who buy COD every year because it's the cool and manly thing to do. These core gamers would rather do anything then play the Wii or any Nintendo related toxin. To them it's a nightmare no human should experience.
5. It's simple really, The second the Nextbox and PS4 come out, the Wii-U wil be labeled as the kid's toy and that o the new microsoft and sony systems are the second coming of gaming messiahs and only the true gamers will play on these systems. The gamecube had the same fate, It was even more powerful then the PS2 but yet it was labeled as a stupid purple lunchbox that only stupid Mario Man children and Zelda saps would play. Real gamers weren't playing the gamecube because it was not cooler then the x box and PS2.
6. Mark my words they'll be lucky if they can get even a fraction of the turncoats who left them.
7. The reason that RE 4 sold so well on the Wii was because it was released at the beginning of the Wii's lifespan. It wasn't until E3 2008 the infamous conference where Nintendo went all casual that the Core gamers started to really despise the Wii. Nintendo revealed a weak point and the media struck fast, hard, and relentlessly. Nintendo had abandonded the core gamer and only wanted to please mom, dad, and grandma. They were only interesed in useless gimmicks and stupid music games.By this time the 3rd part y support had crapped out on the Wii and they all went to support Sony and Microsoft.
If 3rd parties had actually released high quality games at the beginning of the Wii's lifespan then things could have turned out a lot differently. But they didn't and since 2008 the core gamers have come to despise the name Wii and Nintendo ever since. Resident Evil Revelations is a perfect example of this hate disdain. This was the game that the core resident evil fans had been waiting for but because it was on a Nintendo console it was not even worth looking at.
8. I don't have any faith in the core gamer. I think it's a waste of time, money, and resources for Nintendo to try and pursue this market. Nintendo proved with the Wii that they didn't need them, they should only try to get the tunrcoat Nintendo fans back. The core gamers will never like Nintendo and will simply just crap in their faces if Nintendo even tries to win them over. Nintendo has run its course they only bring destruction to games and are de-evovling the industry. No matter how impressive the Wii-U is core gamers will find some way to hate it, even if that reason is simply that it's made by Nintendo and Nintendo is the cause of all the worlds problems.
I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!
