The nephalem's power has the potential to rival and even surpass that of angels and demons combined (see "sin war" lore) as they are the closest representation of the being (anu) which formed the high heavens and from whom all it's negative powers manifested into the primordial dragon, Thatameth (which later succumbed along with Anu, creating the seven lords of hell and the burning hells as well).

The book of cain really gives you a large insight into Diablo lore ;)

yeah i realize that. however, if one man or woman can destroy all evil by him/herself, then what's the point of being afraid of Diablo? why would the whole world be in fear? why would the angels be necessary? i find that the nephalem are "too" powerful in that sense. the story has become "not evil enough" because even the "Prime Evil" can be destroyed by just one person.

The Eternal conflict between the high heavens and the burning hells started thousands of years before the creation of sanctuary and the Nephalem (which are themselves offspring of the demoness Lilith and the angel Inarius). Inarius seeing the power and potential that the Nephalem had, sealed away their powers using the Worldstone (now destroyed) thus humanity was born.

Before the destruction of the Worldstone, only one human has ever achieved a power similar to the high heavens and the burning hells, whom sacrificed himself to end the Sin War. Since then, no other Nephalem has ever walked the earth, but now since the destruction of the Worldstone, there's nothing preventing humanity from reaching it's nephalem status again.

The whole point of the story is to prove that humanity (and the nephalem) are indeed that powerful, thus explaining why a group of heroes was able to face the prime evils in the past in their true form (unlike in the original Diablo, in which Diablo was in a weakened state due to how weak Abernatch, the son of Leoric, was when Diablo possessed him).
