It allows you to manage your social life FAR better than FB and if you have an Android phone, you can make its content sooo much more seamless. Additionally, the default privacy is far better and much easier to setup/understand.

these sites ONLY have value due to their advertising capability.  Without advertising they are worthless.  FB has a challenge to prove the advertising streams can work and continue to work.

Why wouldn't their ad streams continue to work? Facebook has more access to your private life than any other ad stream out there. The way they can data mine your interests and tailor advertising to suit is unmatched and Internet advertising itself would have to fail for Facebook to fail. There's no company better positioned for direct customer advertising than Facebook. Not even Google is as well-positioned for advertising and they know it. That's why they created G+ in the first place.
