Not really, there seems to be at least one default gun that can be very effective if you know how to use it. Not saying CoD games aren't getting repetitive though.

Maybe that has changed since Modern Warfare, but before then you definitely would get a much, much better gun that took twice as few bullets to kill people if you played the game for a few hours...

Yep. The UMP in MW2 and AK74u in Black Ops are some of the first guns you get. Both really overpowered. Range of a sniper even with silencer on these sub machine guns.
