This is pandering of the highest order.
I commend Obama for coming out and saying that he approves of gay marriage, but...
There are really only two sides to the gay marriage debate. You either believe it to be a civil right or you do not.
The caveat to the President's speech is that he thinks this is a states' rights issue.
Does not compute. Does not compute. No matter which side of this debate you fall, one thing that has been long-established in this country is that civil rights are not a states' rights issue. Almost everyone agrees that civil rights can only be enforced on a Federal level.
The President is trying to get the young vote while minimizing the damage done to his other voting demographics. It was a svelte manuevre on his part but it's just more politicking. It's not like the black vote is going to decide to vote Republican over this. The only real risk he's playing here is to the Hispanic vote. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few months.
