There is not a lot of money for boardgame rules developed using standard game equipment (Generally what I have done). It is mainly to get exposure and break into the "I am paid" category. Next up is a product stand-alone in a box, that gets on the shelves. After that, push for winning awards and game of the year. Hope is there is sufficient exposure I can land ongoing gigs somewhere, or a job with a company somewhere. Is not a lot of money, probably would work out to be on par with flipping burgers compensation wise at this point, but it is a starting point.
It is possible things will change over time, with tablet and smart phone devices being the norm, so they lend more towards tabletop games, as opposed to others.
