They include a bit of humour so that the movie can be more appealing to casual people that don't know anything about the respective superhero/s.

Dem casuals. I've yet to see the Avengers still though, but I HIGHLY doubt it even challenges TDK in quality. Maybe in explosion and hollywood factor, but certainly not quality

I'd say the movie doesn't appeal to those who think they aren't casual fans. Every comic fan I know has gone absolutely ga-ga over the film. Like "this is one of the top three superhero movies of all time" crazy about it. And it's not only people I know. I listen to 5-7 comic podcasts and every single one of them has raved about the film. I follow loads of comic creators and fans on Twitter and universally, they have praised the movie.

The "hardcore" fans are the ones most thrilled about the movie. The fact that it appeals to other people is just icing on the cake for us.

Personally, I think TDK is a better film. But that's just because I heart Batman and darker stories appeal to me. But as a straight blockbuster superhero flick, The Avengers is just as good. They're different enough where comparing them is difficult.
