But... The Avengers aren't really gritty. They're Marvel's flagship team, full of slightly flawed good guys. X-Men has always been a far darker series than The Avengers.
Again, Whedon pretty much nailed it here. The movie may not have been what you expected from it but as someone who has read a couple hundred issues of the comic, I can say with utmost certainty that the film was true to the source material.
