Maybe, but isn't it possible this position stands to lose him more than votes than gain? I'm not entirely sure of the current climate on gay marriage in regards to voters of each party, but it seems this position is preaching to the choir while it could lose his the borderline voters. 

Either way, it's out there now and I hope he will make it happen.

I'm guessing it will help with the younger generation. Which really helped Obama in the '08 eletion, and which now just show apathy
