Perhaps it's not criminally underappreciated, but it deserves far more than what it got. I know the cameo in DDD, but that means nothing in the long run.

Just like with ICO. Everyone seems to love it online, but you talk to your friends and you'll find that, actually, fairly few people have actually played it. It deserves more. Some with TWEWY, and even Xenoblade to an extent, despite the Operation Rainfall.

I mean, it sold 650k, which is good, but from the way everyone calls it the best game on DS, you'd expect it'd have sold more...

It is definitely criminally underappreciated.  It never even sold over a million units, and the deep, very interesting combat system deserved to be experienced by millions, not just a few hundred thousand.  That's without even touching on the story, which started out with an extremely stereotypical disengaged teen protagonist but got so damned good and interesting as the game went on.  This was Square-Enix's answer to people's charges that they didn't inovate anymore, and it got the sales numbers to convince them not to try it again.   Unfortunately, the RPG audience was split fairly evenly across DS and PSP (in that gen), so this is a condition that lots of games found themselves in.  The other problem with TWEWY is that it is so deeply ingrained in the DS architecture that it doesn't really lend itself to emulation, without a duel screen set up with a touch screen, DS games really just don't play right.

It does, doesn't it! I really liked that area, despite what people say, and that boss fight there was good, if tricky! I died and had to go back to the Cathedral because I hadn't fould the landmark >.< There's a lot of secret areas, like the three sage summit, and the areas from the Ice Slides. Good times. Glad to see you're enjoying it! And fortunately it only gets better from here! ;)

I really like the Day/Night cycle of this game.  Monolith Soft really stepped it up and made a world that feels like it is alive.  There are tons of HD games that may have higher poly counts and better resolution, but very few come close to touching the art style of this game.  Loving every minute of it.  Tonight I am planning on drowning my sports sorrows in 4-5 hours of Heroponning.
