It's all a matter of taste in the end, but in terms of mass appeal, GoW is in line with the likes of 300, which did well, but is not what "Everyone" will want to play, grossing revenue in proportion to Avatar, which actually LBP and Uncharted are more able to pull off.
I'm not sure how many teenagers play Mario to be totally honest, but anyhow I speak from my development as a teen (and my friends) so it's all personal bias. I don't have numbers to back my claim but I don't think you do either. So we're at a loss.
Regardless, the social phenomenon he was describing is one I've seen in action, very strongly as I grew up. Mario was not cool, playstation was.
