For anyone thinking of moving to Southern California and who wants to live coastal, the only cities I've grown to really like around here are Carlsbad, San Clemente, and La Jolla. La Jolla is an amazingly posh and kickass beach town, but it's more expensive to live in. Carlsbad and San Clemente are very homely towns that haven't succumbed to big business and tourist expansion.
Can't say much about cities north of L.A.
