It's too late in the game for Sony to save this handheld. If the 3DS doesn't bring it to it's grave the smart-devices (tablets, phones etc) surely will!!! Remember Sony at the moment is fighting for their lives and anything that could hinder their progress should be cut off!!! |
well, as long as Apple doesn't bring a "shelf" with buttons and analog sticks for its iphone, i don't see this coming (which really would be the next move for apple). i've tried some games and they are all shitty with crap controls and just interesting for a few minutes. no depth in the games. but yes, i do think this is the last generation of handheld gaming devices and once apple brings some kind of gaming iphone and the others follow, no one will need a vita.
that would be the point where sony needs to either build it's own hardcore smartphone or being successful with it's ps suite, which is honestly a bad idea. i think for the future sony won't be able to run it's own platform on the mobile market, but could compete as a game developer on the iphone / android OS. Nintendo otherwise will always have it's unique selling point: the IPs.
but until then there is still time to go. i'd say at least 3 years where you will need the vita to have the oppurtunity to play some "real" games, not just gimmicky touch minigames. and then... maybe a vita phone? sony and nokia tried, but failed. who knows why they failed with a concept (mobile phone and games) which will kill them (smartphone and games). maybe nokia where too early with it's n-gage, and sony too late with xperia play.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:
WiiU: Donkey Kong
XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse
