And it may yet be true. My girlfriends uncle's job is to find ways of eradicating (disease carrying) species of flies.
Although apparently eradication attempts of the mosquito several decades ago only resulted in one species speciating into seven new species, which makes them far harder to eradicate now. Pretty scary huh? So in that respect, maybe trying to destroy all flies would make things worse, not better.
